As Pakeha and Maori lesbians socialised less with each other…
... From the late 70s, lesbians became increasingly involved in anti-racism and in looking at racism within Pakeha lesbian communities. Maori lesbians often chose to focus their political energy in Maori groups rather than in mixed lesbian groups.
Maori and tauiwi lesbians often co-operated in anti-racism actions, especially in the 1980s, and a local group, Lesbian Anti-Racism, did politicising posters.
Issues of class, also, were discussed more openly and frequently among Pakeha lesbians. (Julie Glamuzina, Out Front, 1993). Sept. 1984, Maori dykes' group formed in Te Whanganui a Tara.
Lesbians made the first Lesbian Radio programme starting in 1984. It continues now, not as lesbian-only, and is called Quilted Bananas.
Lesbian Recreation Week: organised by Val with a selection of activities to be learnt, e.g. kayaking + abseiling.
L.I.L.A.C. Lesbian Information, Library and Archives Centre started in 1994 + is currently at Level 2, 187 Willis Street. LILAC, by and for lesbians, is fairly unique (in the world) as a Lesbian Library, which is still running. It lends the usual library things, is a place for meetings, book launches, musical groups and displays lesbian art + posters.
Adelaide Road Flats: 1989 - 1990. One flat had Jac, Dot, Barbara, and Jax . Next door were Una, Jo, Kim and Carmel. There were lots of conversations thru the windows which were very close to each other. "We could see all the comings and goings! Jac got together with Joy by climbing out of our kitchen window into their place. We were a welcoming bunch ... many visitors from around NZ and overseas. There were potluck parties, competing stereos from various bedrooms, card games between the houses, meetings, and lots of chatting on the veranda of our house. Jac and I went up to Waitangi in 1990: it was 150 years since the signing of Te Tititi. It was also the Commonwealth Games in Auckland (before Waitangi Day), and Lesbians were protesting there too. So Sussun and I went up earlier - stayed at the Ponsonby Community Centre with a big group of Lesbians from all over Aotearoa.
